THE BUSINESS
[n. collective noun for a collection of flies]

The box is handcrafted, the collection of wines it contains is utterly unique.

Chambourcin does not have the distinction of being called a noble grape. It is most often grown for cashflow rather than prestige, and shunned by critics (Jancis Robinson, a notable exception). And this box probably won't shift that general perception… since we only have a dozen.

So who and what is this box for? Among those who will buy one of the limited few boxes will be those who already understand the wines' calibre. Some may know and enjoy Chambourcin broadly. Some may buy out of curiosity, and some because of the pretty box.

But in fact... this wine is aimed at the sceptics.

There are six bottles of Chamboourcin spanning from 2004 to 2009. Chambourcin is not reputed as an ageing wine, and yet some of these wines are still just stretching their legs. These are big, confident wines with soft tannins, not the simple quaffers. These are not what Chambourcin is known for, but what they can be. And they can be mistaken for a top tier vintage Cabernet Sauvignon at a Beefsteak and Burgundy Dinner.

Our Chambourcin was grown in a low-humidity continental climate with its feet in the gritty volcanic clay soils of the Warrumbungles, whereas Chambourcin, more typically, is hampered by being grown as a fallback variety in humid climates where other grapes struggle (due to its disease resistance). Over the years, we followed the variety as it taught us what it is capable of. And it taught us that it could play lead, not just backup. It would hang on the vine beyond late ripener petit verdot, and it attained an acid/sugar balance that was astounding. All these wines are well over 14% alcohol (some around 16%), and yet they are balanced and supple. And with 20 years of age, they have evolved complexity far beyond our expectation.

This box in a way serves as a swan song, but also a hope. A hope that if we were able to produce Chambourcins of such power and finesse, it is a variety that has the potential to go on to thrive in other vineyards around Australia. It also happens to be one of the easiest to grow. Plant it and find out.

Please contact us with any queries, and note these boxes have a longer lead time (we will be in touch)
